11-20  explosion-fire destroys shed on flagstad property

Nobody was injured in an explosion and fire that destroyed a pole shed at the residence of former Fond du Lac Fire Chief, Dave Flagstad. Firefighters were called to the scene on Grandview Road in the town of Empire shortly after 5:00 Wednesday evening.  Sheriff's Lieutenant, Bill Tadych, says the shed and contents were destroyed.  He says numerous boats, tractors, trailers and supplies were stored in the shed.  Tadych says a spark from a grinder machine may have started the fire...but the cause remains under investigation.  Firefighters from Eden, Mount Calvary and Saint Cloud worked to prevent the fire from spreading to the nearby residence...about 30 yards from the shed.

11-20  fire damages fdl home

Nobody was injured in a fire that damaged a Fond du lac home last night. Firefighters were called to the scene at 78 Seymour Street shortly before 9:00 Wednesday night.  Fire Battalion Chief, Larry Wunsch, says the cause of the fire appears to be faulty electrical wiring.  Firefighters were on the scene for a couple of hours.

11-20  hit and run drunk driver arrested

A Fond du Lac man was arrested following a hit and run crash Wednesday night. Police say an SUV slammed into a tree on Mohawk Avenue and fled the scene. Police were able to track down the suspect...after finding the vehicle license plate at the scene. Police say the driver was drunk.

11-20  king continues to gain votes during recount

Democrat Jessica King continues to pick up votes following day two of a recount in the 18th Senate District race.  King requested the recount after losing to Republican Randy Hopper by 181 votes on Election day.  King picked up 11 more votes in Winnebago County Wednesday...after gaining six votes the day before. In Waupun, King lost three votes and Hopper lost one. That gives King a net gain of 16 votes since the recount started. She now trails Hopper by 165 votes. The Government Accountability Board has ordered that the recount be completed by December first.

11-20  fdl police and fire commission to meet thursday on fire chief search

A decision on hiring a new Fond du Lac Fire Chief could come Thursday evening. The Fond du Lac Police and Fire Commission is scheduled to meet behind closed doors late this afternoon at the City-County Government Center to discuss whether to hire Durham, New Hampshire Fire Chief, Peter O'Leary.   The commission met with O'Leary earlier this week for a second and final interview. That interview lasted approximately an hour. O'Leary was the only candidate to be called back for a  second interview.   He was one of 30 candidates who applied for the job. O'Leary has been the Durham Fire Chief since 2006...and has nearly 30 years of experience. He spent 15 years with the Wheaton, Illinois Fire Department. John Duffy has been the interim chief since Joe Clow resigned September first to pursue other career opportunities.

11-20  dnr promotions

Two area DNR wardens are getting promotions.  DNR Warden Supervisor in the Oshkosh office, Todd Schaller, has been named the new DNR Recreational, Safety and Education Section Chief in Madison.  Schaller says Fond du Lac Area Warden, Ed McCann, has been assigned to an investigative unit in the LaCrosse area.  Meanwhile, Schaller says wardens statewide are prepared for the start of the gun-deer season this weekend. Schaller says the DNR wants hunters to take the extra step to make it a safe hunt.

11-20  triple a projects slight decline in thanksgiving travel

The State Triple A is projecting a slight decline in Thanksgiving travel for the first time since 2002.  Approximately 41 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home...a decrease of 600 thousand travelers or one point four percent from last year. The Great Lakes region, including Wisconsin is projected to see a point nine percent decrease in travel. Its the first decline in Thanksgiving  holiday travel in six years and the fourth consecutive travel holiday this year with a decline. A Triple A spokesman says the economy is the main reason.

11-20  home sales down

Homes sales and prices in Wisconsin continue to drop.  Existing home sales in the state fell 16-point seven percent in the third quater and median prices fell five-point-three percent compared to the third quarter of last year.  Wisconsin Realtors Association President, Bill Malkasian, says he's not surprised.  Malkasian says potential home buyers are holding off because they lack confidence in the economy.  Malkasian says he is still optimistic that sales will start to improve sometime next year.  Malkasian says once buyers do get off the fence they will find some excellent opportunities.

11-20  kohler layoffs

KOHLER, Wis. (AP) - The prolonged housing slump and weakened economy is causing the Kohler Company to continue to make cuts in its workforce.  Kohler says 73 administrative employees in kitchen and bath and corporate operations have been notified that they will lose their jobs. Public affairs manager Todd Weber says all will receive severance packages.  Kohler laid off 50 employees last month and more production workers earlier this month, bringing the total number of laid off union workers to 500.

11-20  gundrum says united states is doing the job right in iraq

A Republican state lawmaker says he believes progress is being made in Iraq...based on his nine months in Baghdad.  Representative, Mark Gundrum, returned home this week after serving in Iraq with the Army Reserve 432nd Civil Affairs Battalion based in Green Bay.  Gundrum, a captain in the Judge Advocate General Corps, served as a senior rule of law advisor for the US Embassy and  Multi-National Corps-Iraq. Gundrum worked with the Iraqi judiciary on efforts to combat corruption and taught courses to members of the Iraqi parliament on open government,  serving constituents and drafting legislation.  Gundrum says his impression is that things have improved dramatically...even during the time he was there.  Gundrum says in his personal opinion the present strategy in Iraq is being "done just right."  Gundrum was a guest on AM 1170's Between the Lines program.

11-20  fdl man injured in moped accident

A Fond du Lac man was injured in a moped accident in Fond du Lac Wednesday evening. The Fond du Lac County Sheriff's Department says the moped operator lost control and crashed on North Pioneer Road and Parkridge Lane. The accident was reported shortly after 5:30 Wednesday evening. The moped operator was transported to Saint Agnes hospital.

11-20  family claims donald driver's father was beaten by police officers

Family members claim the father of Green Bay Packers wide receiver, Donald Driver, was beaten by Houston, Texas police officers. A report says Driver was arrested for outstanding traffic warrants and was "unresponsive" when he arrived at jail. He was transported to the hospital. The Houston Police Department issued a written statement that it takes assault allegations very seriously and will conduct a thorough investigation.

11-20  fdl police k-9 captures suspect

A Fond du Lac man learned the hard way...you can't outrun a police dog. When police officers arrived at a 10th Street home for a complaint that Joshua Immel was threatening his mother, Immel took off running. Police K-9 Grendal chased Immel down...biting him in the leg at Fairgrounds Park.  Thats where officers caught up with Immel and took him into custody. The 18 year old Immel faces charges of disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and bail jumping.

11-20  ripon drug bust

Multiple drug charges are being referred to the Fond du lac County District Attorneys Office for three Ripon residents who were arrested back in August following a drug bust at their home. During the execution of a search warrant, officers seized approximately 23 grams of heroin, one marijuana plant, processed marijuana, prescription narcotic medication and more than eight thousand dollars in cash. The Lake Winnebago MEG Unit, and the Wisconsin Department of Justice assisted Ripon Police.

11-20  ripon bar fight

A Ripon man has been charged in connection with a knife fight outside a Ripon bar. Twenty three year old, Brian Henke, is charged with substantial battery as a repeater, use of a dangerous weapon and misdemeanor battery. A criminal complaint says Henke is accused of attacking another man and threatening him with a knife. Henke told police the other man had a knife and he was acting in self defense. The charges carry up to 15 years in prison and 20 thousand dollars in fines.

11-20  fire rescue

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (AP) - A teenage girl, trapped in an upstairs bedroom, was rescued from her burning home by police and firefighters.  Police say the parents of the 15-year-old girl were able to escape the fire overnight Tuesday and call 911. When police arrived they saw the girl yelling from an upstairs window with dark smoke pouring out. Officers tried going in the house to rescue her, but the stairway was engulfed in flames. Police say some officers tried to find a ladder while others tried to get the girl to jump to them. When firefighters arrived, they put a ladder to the window and were able to rescue her. The girl, her parents and several police officers suffered minor smoke inhalation.

11-20  homeless man breaks leg after jumping from moving train

A homeless man suffered a possible broken leg after jumping from a moving train in Horicon Wednesday. Rescue personel were called to the scene on the railroad tracks near Washington Street. Two men on the train jumped...and one man injured his leg. He was transported to the hospital.

11-20   dodge county car accident sends four people to the hospial

Four people were injured and transported to the hospital following a two vehicle accident in Dodge County.  The Dodge County Sheriff's Department says a vehicle driven by 15 year old, Deven Fink, of Lomira slid through an intersection in the town of Theresa striking a vehicle.  The driver of the other vehicle and three passengers were transported to the hospital.

11-20  oakfield man killed in rollover accident

A one vehicle rollover accident has claimed the life of an Oakfield man. The victim has been identified as 58 year old, Monty Wallen. Fond du Lac County Sheriff's Lieutenant, Bill Tadych, says the accident happened shortly before 2:30 Tuesday afternoon on County Highway B south of Highway D in the town of Oakfield.   Brooks ambulance, the Oakfield Fire Department and first responders assisted at the scene. The accident remains under investigation.

11-20  sheriff's powers

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - An appeals court says Wisconsin sheriffs must follow union rules when they assign deputies to transport state and federal prisoners.  The District 2 Court of Appeals says Ozaukee County Sheriff Maury Straub does not have the constitutional power to ignore a collective bargaining agreement when putting together a prisoner transportation team.  If it stands, the ruling means sheriffs must follow union rules involving seniority, hiring from within the department and posting jobs when they assemble those teams.  Straub and the county had argued the sheriff was not bound by such rules in appointing and removing deputies because he has broad constitutional power to run the jail.

11-20  open records

A statewide public records audit found that one in 10 requests for basic documents was denied or ignored by local governments.  Another two in 10 requests were fulfilled only after records custodians required the requesters to identify themselves or explain why they wanted the documents, which violates state law.  Freedom of Information Council President Bill Lueders, who is editor of Isthmis newspaper, says the audit was not meant to trick anyone. He says requesters asked for "basic information" that should be available without problems.  The audit was conducted by the Wisconsin Freedom of Information Council and the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Journalism and Mass Communication. It involved 318 public records requests filed in 65 counties.

The Fond du Lac City Police Department is taking this opportunity to remind the members of the

community that the WINTER PARKING RESTRICTIONS are in effect  

Parking from November 15th to March 15th is restricted

between the hours of 8:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m.

 

On EVEN NUMBERED DAYS, starting at 8:00 p.m. parking is restricted to the EVEN side of the street. On ODD NUMBERED DAYS, starting at 8:00 p.m. parking is restricted to the ODD side of the street. Any METERED AREA is still restricted to 60 minutes between the hours of 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m.

 

This ordinance overrides all other on street parking restrictions where parking is allowed.

Please remind family, friends and overnight guests of these restrictions as violations can be costly. Thank you for your cooperation.
